Smokies Announce Roster Moves Thursday

SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies, Class AA minor league affiliate of the Chicago Cubs, announce today that Smokies pitcher Jesse Estrada has been released and that pitcher James Russell has been sent to the Triple-A Iowa Cubs. In related moves, pitchers Marco Carrillo (High-A Daytona) and Jayson Ruhlman (Iowa) have been sent to Tennessee.

Carrillo has thrown only one inning this year with Daytona, allowing one hit. In four games with the Smokies in 2008, he went 2-2 with a 7.03 ERA, striking out 22 hitters in 24.1 innings. He was signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent in 2005.

This will be Ruhlman's second stint with Tennessee in 2009, going 1-0 with a 1.42 ERA in six appearances with the Smokies back in April. While in Iowa, he went 0-0 with an 8.03 ERA in 12 relief appearances. He was selected by the Cubs in the 23rd round of the 2005 MLB First-Year Player Draft.

Estrada went 0-1 with a 9.64 ERA in three appearances (two starts) this month with the Smokies. Russell went 2-3 with a 5.11 ERA in 11 appearances (five starts) for Tennessee.
