Louisville Bats News Release
Louisville, KY - The Louisville Bats dropped their fourth game in a row, losing to the Rochester Red Wings, 5-2. After a rain delay that lasted two hours and 15 minutes, the Red Wings' sizzling bats continued to scorch Louisville in front of a crowd of 5,985 fans.
Anthony Swarzak (2-3, 2.03) got the victory for the Red Wings. Swarzak pitched seven innings, giving up one run on only five hits. He also struck six batters. Matt Maloney (2-1, 3.56) took the loss for the Bats.
The Red Wings looked fresh after the delay, scoring a quick run on a pair of singles and some crafty base running. With one out in the first, Trevor Plouffe knocked a base hit through the left side of the infield. Two batters later, Justin Huber walked. Following a double steal by Plouffe and Huber, Dustin Martin beat out an infield single. This allowed Plouffe to scamper home from third base, giving Rochester the lead, 1-0.
In the top of the second, the Red Wings appeared to tack on another run when Matt Macri crushed a pitch to deep left field. Breaking the recent trend of shaky defense by the Bats, Jonny Gomes scaled the wall perfectly to take away a possible home run. However, just a batter later, Rochester had it going again as David Winfree tripled to the gap in right center, barely out of the reach of center fielder Drew Stubbs. Drew Butera's RBI ground out-stretched the Red Wings' lead to 2-0. Butera finished 3-for-4 for the Red Wings.
Rochester scored two more runs in the fourth. After a single by Martin and a walk by Jose Morales, the Red Wings pulled off their second double steal of the night. Bats' starter Maloney then struck out Macri, bringing Winfree to the plate. Winfree and Butera hit back-to-back RBI singles, extending the lead to 4-0.
In the fifth, Luke Hughes homered to straight away center field, giving the Red Wings a five-run lead.
The Bats threatened to score in the home-half of the fifth, starting with a leadoff bunt single by Stubbs, who placed the ball methodically down the third base line. Danny Dorn followed with a walk. After Dorn was forced at second, the Bats had runners on the corners with one out, but failed to capitalize. Wilkin Castillo grounded into a double play to end the inning.
Wes Bankston put the Bats on the scoreboard with an RBI triple to right field in the sixth. The hit scored Drew Sutton, who was on first base after a single, cutting the Red Wings' lead to four runs. Sutton finished his second game in a Bats' uniform 3-for-4.
The Bats scored in the ninth on a Jonny Gomes' home run, his fifth home run of the year. Gomes homered in the ninth last night as well and his shot to right provided the final tally of 5-2.
The Bats will wrap up the series with the Red Wings when they resume action tomorrow night at 7:05 p.m. at Louisville Slugger Field. Gates will open at 5:30 for Budweiser GameTime Happy Hour on the Overlook Deck. Enjoy $1 Bud and Bud Light from 5:30-7:00 p.m. Probable starting pitchers will be RHP Sam LeCure (1-2, 4.98) for the Bats and RHP Philip Humber (1-0, 1.29) for the Red Wings.
