
Bats' Comeback Bid Falls Short, Lose 12-9

LOUISVILLE, KY-Louisville (66-68) battled back from seven down to pull even in the seventh, but couldn't finish off the rally, falling 12-9 to Columbus (59-73) in 10 innings. A crowd of 10,183 watched the home team fight back to a 9-9 tie, only to have Columbus score three in the tenth inning, handing the Bats their third consecutive defeat.
The Bats comeback attempt was highlighted by a four-run seventh in which second baseman Mark Bellhorn doubled off the outfield fence scoring two. The next batter, right fielder Jeff Bannon, pulled the Bats even with a two-run home run to right. Bellhorn and Bannon each went 2-for-4 and had a combined five RBI. First baseman Jesse Gutierrez went 3-for-5 with a double and a run scored. The three hits by Gutierrez marks his third three-hit game of the season, his first since June 20 at Buffalo.
Clippers' left fielder Kory Casto broke the 9-9 tie in the tenth inning with a bases loaded single, scoring two. Former Bat Tyrell Godwin drove in another run with a single, putting Columbus up by three. The Clippers jumped out to a 9-2 lead early, scoring three runs in three of the first four innings. Brandon Harper hit a three-run homerun in the third, part of a 4-for-5 night for the Clippers' catcher.
Reliever Marcus McBeth (1-1, 2.57) takes the loss for Louisville. McBeth went 1.0 inning allowing three runs on five hits. Starter Richie Gardner (4-4, 6.07) did not factor in the decision despite giving up nine runs on 10 hits in 4.0 innings.
LHP Arnie Munoz (3-1, 2.77) picks up the win in relief for the Clippers. Starter Collin Balester left the game in the in the fifth inning with a chipped fingernail. Balester gave up four earned on seven hits.
The Bats will try to avoid dropping their fourth in a row tomorrow night against these same Columbus Clippers. LHP Phil Dumatrait (10-5, 3.49) takes the mound for Louisville. Columbus will hand the ball to LHP Billy Traber (2-2, 3.03). Game time is set for 6:15 p.m.
