The Calgary Vipers offense snapped out of a two game funk in a big way as they defeated the Edmonton Capital 12-6 at Foothills Stadium in Calgary, Alberta. The Vipers bats collected 16 hits and scored three runs in three separate innings. With the win Calgary improves to a Golden League best 36-16 overall and a North Division best 10-3 in the second half.
At the plate Jorge Mejia led the way going three-for-five with four runs scored while Ivan Reyes also had three hits with two runs batted in. Colin Moro also had a solid night going two-for-four with a home run, three runs scored, and two batted in while Rick Guarno knocked in three runs with two doubles while scoring twice as well.
Joe Sergent (5-3) started the game for Calgary and won his second straight in tossing five innings giving up four runs and not walking a batter. Todd Moser was great out of the bullpen throwing two scoreless innings while striking out two and not walking anyone. Lou Pote (6-2) picked up the rare loss in giving up eight runs on 12 hits in his five innings of work.
Calgary opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning as Colin Moro singled, stole second base, and scored on a Rick Guarno run batted in double. Dillon O'Krane followed with a groundout to move Guarno to third base and Ivan Reyes clutched up with a two-out RBI infield single to take a 2-0 lead.
The Vipers added to the lead in the third frame as Drew Miller and Jorge Mejia singled, Caonabo Cosme walked to load the bases, Guarno doubled again for two more RBI, and Reyes once again drove in a run with two outs to increase the lead to 5-0.
Edmonton got onto the scoreboard in the fourth inning as Darryl Brinkley doubled, Joey Gomes singled in a run, Walter Young doubled, and Carlos Duncan plated a run with a sacrifice fly for a 5-2 score.
Right back responded the Snakes in the bottom of the frame as Fehlandt Lentini doubled, Mejia singled, Lentini scored on a wild pitch, and Moro smacked his seventh home run of the season for a 8-2 advantage.
The Capitals got those two runs back in the top of the fifth as Matt Ceriani doubled and recently signed Mark Okano launched a two run shot to make the score 8-4.
A run was added by Calgary in the sixth as Mejia walked, moved to second base on a Moro groundout, and scored on a Cosme RBI single for a 9-4 lead.
The Vipers increased their lead in the seventh inning as Miller singled, Mejia doubled, Moro was hit by a pitch to load the bases, Cosme cashed one with a single, O'Krane walked for a RBI, and Moro scored on a wild pitch for a 12-4 advantage.
Walter Young got Edmonton back a run in the eighth with a solo home run for a 12-5 score.
Jorge Cortes hit another solo home run for the Capitals in the ninth to close out the scoring at 12-6.
Paint the Park Pink Weekend continues on Saturday July 25th at 5:05 PM MDT and Sunday July 26th at 1:35 PM MDT with the Vipers again wearing special Pink Jerseys which will be auctioned off at the end of each contest. Special Pink Flowers will be handed out and Pink Bats and Pink Hats will be on sale. Proceeds from all money raised will go to the Breast Cancer Supportive Care Foundation.
On Saturday Pink ViperPod Speakers will also be handed out while Hideki Nagasaka (3-0) will toe the rubber.
On Sunday there will be a "Show & Shine" where Classic Cars and Custom Motor Cycles will be in the parking lot from 10:00 AM MDT to 1:00 PM MDT. Erik Dessau (6-1) takes to the bump for the matinee and is 3-0 in his last four starts.
