July 24, 2009 - Golden Baseball League (GBL)
Tucson Toros News Release

Tucson, AZ - The Tucson Toros announced the signing of former Arizona Diamondbacks All-Star Junior Spivey on Friday. The 34 year old Second Baseman/Outfielder will immediately become the club's most tenured player, bringing the experience of over 1,500 Major League at bats to the Toros lineup.

Arizona Diamondbacks fans are well familiar with Junior Spivey's meteoric rise to stardom. The Chandler, AZ resident made his big league debut with Arizona in 2001, showing promise by belting five home runs in limited at bats. Junior followed that up with a monster 2002 campaign in which he was named to the National League All-Star squad. Spivey helped the Diamondbacks return to the postseason that year by hitting .301 with 103 runs scored, 16 home runs and 11 stolen bases at the team's everyday second baseman, placing 14th in National MVP voting at the end of the season.

Junior has logged five Major League seasons in his career thus far, seeing time with the Diamondbacks, Milwaukee Brewers and Washington Nationals. With his first game played, Spivey will become the fourth Tucson Toro with Major League experience, joining Righthander Lorenzo Barcelo, Lefthander Jason Jacome and First Baseman Jim Rushford.

He began the 2009 season playing for the Camden Riversharks of the Atlantic League.

Spivey is expected to be in uniform for tonight's contest against the Victoria Seals and will be available for media interviews beginning at 5:00 p.m.

The Toros will begin their first homestand of the second half of the GBL season tonight when they host the Seals at Hi Corbett Field at 7:00 p.m.
