Basabe Fuels Comeback Effort as Barons Top Biscuits

July 31, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Birmingham Barons News Release

MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Luis Basabe delivered a game-tying home run in the ninth and Luis Gonzalez clubbed a three-run blast in the 10th as the Birmingham Barons (22-15, 49-57) erased a four-run deficit in a 10-6 win over the Montgomery Biscuits (27-13, 71-39) on Wednesday night at Riverwalk Stadium.

Basabe, whose two-run blast with one down in the ninth helped send the game to extra innings, posted a three-hit night at the plate and reached base four times. The White Sox No. 9 prospect singled to lead off the game and delivered another leadoff base knock in the third before he sent his second home run of the season over the right-field fence in the ninth.

After Mauricio Cabrera posted a scoreless bottom half of the frame, Luis Gonzalez roped a three-run shot just inside the right-field foul pole in the 10th to propel the Barons to their second win of the season. It marked Gonzalez's seventh home run of the season and served as the spark plug in a five-run extra frame.

Gonzalez matched Basabe with a three-hit effort and also reached safely four times as the Barons erased a four-run deficit to pull within 3.5 games of the North Division-leading Biscuits.

Montgomery jumped on top 4-0 in the opening frame when Jim Haley sent a grand slam to left off Barons starter Tanner Banks. The Biscuits touched up Banks for four runs on eight hits across 4.2 innings of work in a no-decision. The 27-year-old southpaw limited the damage, however, and settled in for three-plus scoreless frames after the grand slam.

Birmingham cut the deficit to 4-2 in the third via a run-scoring single off the bat of Gavin Sheets and an RBI-groundout from Gonzalez. Strong relief efforts from Tyler Johnson, Kodi Medeiros and Mauricio Cabrera kept the Barons within striking distance, but Montgomery took a 5-2 lead into the eighth.

Damek Tomscha brought the Barons within a pair with a solo shot to left for his third home run of the campaign. The former Auburn standout owns a .412 clip at the plate with two home runs and eight RBI across his past nine games.

Basabe then leveled the score in the ninth with a two-run homer beyond the outstretched arm of Biscuits right fielder Thomas Milone. Gonzalez followed with his three-run blast in the 10th to send the Barons to just their third victory this season (3-43) when trailing after eight innings.

Consequently, Montgomery lost for just the third time all season (55-3) when holding a lead after eight innings of play.

Cabrera (W, 4-3) earned the win out of the bullpen with two scoreless frames, while Biscuits left-hander Dalton Moats (L, 1-3) suffered the loss.

The Barons will continue their 10-game road trip in Pensacola when they take on the Blue Wahoos in a five-game set beginning Thursday night. Birmingham will send right-hander Lincoln Henzman (2-5, 5.20) to the mound against Pensacola right-hander Griffin Jax (4-3, 2.34).

First pitch in the series opener is scheduled for 6:35 p.m. CT at Blue Wahoos Stadium and the game will be broadcast via WJQX-FM 100.5.
