Red Deer Rebels News Release
LETHBRIDGE - The Red Deer Rebels and Lethbridge Hurricanes have had one-goal games all season long so why should Friday night be any different? But it was. Red Deer won their fourth in a row with a 2-0 win over the Hurricanes. FIRST PERIOD The Rebels got a huge monkey - maybe it was more of a gorilla - off their back at 10:03. Going into the game Red Deer was two-for-12 on the powerplay against the Hurricanes. But DOMINIK VOLEK was in the middle of the right face-off circle when he let a one-timer fly to beat Lethbridge goalie Ty Rimmer ... on the power play. RHYSE DIENO picked up an assist to extend his point streak to 10 games. Red Deer had a good first period, and with 13 minutes gone, had a 12-5 shot clock advantage. The Hurricanes came close when Josh Derko hit the post with five minutes remaining in the period. With two seconds remaining in their second man advantage TYSON NESS let a rocket go that caught Rimmer just under the mask. It was a good road period for the Rebels who outshot the Hurricanes 17-9.
SECOND PERIOD Halfway through the period TURNER ELSON had a glorious chance to put the Rebels up by two. Elson zoomed down centre ice while short-handed, forcing Rimmer to make a nifty left pad save. Lethbridge had a much better effort, but the Rebels kept them off the scoreboard. Still, the Hurricanes had a 12-5 shot clock advantage after 40 minutes, and 32-30 through three periods.
THIRD PERIOD There was a playoff atmosphere for the final 20 minutes as both teams didn't give much. Rebel goalie PATRIK BARTOSAK performed his usual magic in the late going to preserve the win, and collect his third shut-out of the season. ELSON scored an empty-net goal with one second left.
MOLSON CUP THREE STARS 1. TY RIMMER (LETH) 2. PATRICK BARTOSAK (RD) 3. DOMINIK VOLEK (RD)
