Silvertips Can't Get Right at Tri-City

KENNEWICK - A tight 1-1 game at the halfway point turned into a 6-2 defeat for the Everett Silvertips as the Tri-City Americans scored five goals in a 16-minute span of the second and third periods Friday night at the Toyota Center. The loss snapped Everett's two-game winning streak in Kennewick and continued its current winless skid ahead of a pivotal matchup with the Seattle Thunderbirds Saturday night in Kent.

Austin Adam scored his first goal of the season and set up another for the Silvertips in his first game back from a 14-game injury absence. Josh Winquist drew a pair of assists in his first game back from injury as well and Tyler Sandhu scored the other Everett goal. Tri-City's powerplay unit found the net three times on five opportunities, while the Silvertips were scoreless on four chances of their own.

Everett grabbed an early lead just 31 seconds into the contest as Tyler Sandhu deflected Austin Adam's long wrist shot past Troy Trombley on the game's first shot. The lead held up until the 15:59 mark of the first, when Justin Feser one-timed a Mitch Topping feed into the Silvertip net during the Americans' second powerplay of the period to even the score. The 'Tips killed off another Tri-City powerplay late in the period and the game was tied at one through 20 minutes.

The Silvertips were unable to convert a 5-on-3 powerplay opportunity early in the second and the 1-1 score remained through most of the period before the Americans jumped ahead with a three-goal outburst over five minutes. Feser started the run with his second goal of the night on a tap-in at the goal mouth to finish off a crisp rush at 12:17. With Tri-City on the powerplay three minutes later, Connor Cox' clearing attempt caromed off an American and right to Mitch Topping, who snuck a quick wrister inside the far post to make it 3-1. Beau McCue then chipped a rebound into the top corner less than 90 seconds after that to give the Ams a 4-1 edge after two.

Tri-City opened the final stanza on the powerplay and quickly extended the advantage as Austin Lotz stopped a Malte Stromwall drive from the right circle only to see Jesse Mychan knock in the rebound just 38 seconds in. Mychan scored another tap-in goal on a nice feed from Feser eight minutes later to make it 6-1. With the puck along the right boards just before the final horn, Austin Adam released a wrist shot that beat Troy Trombley short-side to provide the final 6-2 margin.

Austin Lotz (12-16-1-1) stopped 23 of 29 shots in his first game back from a nine-game absence before giving way to Daniel Cotton, who added three saves over the final ten minutes. Troy Trombley (4-0-0-0) stopped 23 Everett shots in the win as Tri-City finished with a 32-35 shot advantage.

The Silvertips will be right back in action Saturday night with another pivotal matchup against the U.S. Division rival Seattle Thunderbirds. Opening faceoff is set for 6:05 pm at the ShoWare Center in Kent as the 'Tips and T-Birds meet for the ninth time this season with two important points at stake in the Western Conference playoff race.
