Wheeling Nailers News Release

The Wheeling Nailers, proud ECHL affiliate of the Pittsburgh Penguins and Montreal Canadiens are excited to announce a transaction for the upcoming season. Wheeling has signed forward Chris Barton to a one-year ECHL contract.

"Chris was a vital part of our team's success last season, especially when it came to putting points on the boards," said head coach Clark Donatelli. "I was excited to see him get rewarded with some time in Wilkes-Barre/Scranton last year, and am looking forward to working with him again this season, as his game continues to reach new heights," he said.

Barton, 25, returns to the Nailers, following a stellar rookie campaign that saw him win two team awards, while also being named to the ECHL All-Rookie Team. Chris' journey to the pros began with the AJHL's Camrose Kodiaks, where he spent two seasons, accumulating 41 goals, 63 assists, and 104 points in 116 regular season games. During the second year, he added 11 points in 14 postseason contests, helping to lead the Kodiaks to a league championship. The Calgary, AB native then went on to attend Merrimack College for four years, where he majored in Management, while also playing hockey. Barton appeared in 141 games with the Warriors, tallying 48 goals, 71 assists, and 119 points. After appearing in one game with the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at the end of his senior year, Chris completed his first professional season a year ago, playing in 69 games with the Nailers, scoring 29 goals, 31 assists, and 60 points. He was also given the opportunity to play five games with the AHL's Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins.

"I'm very excited to return to Wheeling and compete for a championship, with some of the greatest teammates and fans," said Barton. "We fell short last year, but with most of the guys returning, we should have a very balanced team. I'm looking forward to October, and another great season in Wheeling," he said.

The Nailers will begin the regular season on October 13th in Cincinnati, in the first of four straight road games, before playing their home opener on October 26th against the Reading Royals. Nailers 2012-13 Ticket Packages are on sale now. Packages start at just $7.50 per game. Call 304-234-GOAL or wheelingnailers.com for more information.
