Barrett nominated for 'coach of the year' award

The Saskatchewan Roughriders are pleased to announce that head coach Danny Barrett has been selected as one of three finalists for the 2003 CFL Coach of the Year award. Mike "Pinball" Clemons of the Toronto Argonauts and Edmonton's Tom Higgins were also nominated for the Annis Stukus award.

Danny Barrett led the Roughriders to an 11-7 record in 2003, which was their first winning season since 1994. Last year also marked the first time the Riders were in the playoffs in back to back seasons since 1993 & 1994. The Riders Western Division Semi-Final victory over the Winnipeg Blue Bombers also marked the Riders first playoff win since 1997.

Barrett took over the coaching reigns in 2000 and has improved the club in each of his four seasons; going 5-12-0 in his first year, 6-12-0 in 2001, 8-10-0-2 in 2002 and finally a best to date 11-7-0 in 2003. Barrett's 30 victories as head coach of the Roughriders places him fifth on the all-time list only eight wins behind John Gregory.

The finalists were selected by 27 members of the Football Reporters of Canada. The winner will be announced at the Coach of the Year lunch on Fenruary 26, 2004 in Edmonton.
