May 19, 2019 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release
BIRMINGHAM, AL - The Birmingham Barons (18-25) walked off the Mississippi Braves (19-23) in the bottom of the ninth inning for the second time in four games on Sunday, earning a 2-1 victory to clinch the series. Mitch Roman hit a sacrifice fly to right field scoring Blake Rutherford to give the Barons their third win in four days over the M-Braves.
Ian Anderson made his team-leading ninth start on Sunday in Birmingham and fell an out short of recording a quality start. Anderson held the Barons off the scoreboard through five frames before running into some trouble in the sixth inning. The No. 2 prospect for the Atlanta Braves surrendered three consecutive two-out singles to end his outing. The last was a run-scoring single by Rutherford that tied the game at 1-1.
Claudio Custodio (L, 1-1) took over for Anderson and struck out Trey Michalczewski to end the sixth-inning threat.
Anderson ended his outing with 5.2 innings of one-run baseball, walking none and striking out five. Anderson now ranks fourth in the Southern League with 52 strikeouts on the season. He threw exactly 100 pitches on Sunday.
The M-Braves struck first for the third time in four games in the top of the first inning. Drew Waters led off the game with a single and swiped second base to get into scoring position. The steal was his second in the series and sixth on the season. Ryan Casteel followed a strikeout by Cristian Pache with a single, extending his hitting streak to nine games. Andy Wilkins walked to load the bases for Riley Unroe. The recent addition brought home Waters on a fielder's choice and the M-Braves led 1-0. Birmingham starter Blake Battenfield escaped the first inning with just one run scoring. Battenfield worked 5.1 innings during his second Double-A start, giving up just one run in the no-decision.
Custodio gave up a leadoff single in the bottom of the ninth inning to Rutherford, but recovered and struck out Michalczewski for the first out. Pinch-hitter Ti'Quan Forbes singled to put two on base and then a wild pitch advanced both runners setting up the sacrifice fly by Roman.
Custodio suffered his first loss and surrendered his first run since being promoted to the M-Braves earlier in the month. The 28-year-old has yielded just one run to the opposition over 14.1 innings with Mississippi.
Casteel's nine-game hitting streak matches Pache's streak in April for the longest this season by an M-Braves batter. The loss drops the M-Braves to 2-7 on the road trip to Montgomery and Birmingham.
The M-Braves and Barons conclude the five-game series on Monday night at Regions Field. LHP Kyle Muller (1-1, 2.27) makes the start for the M-Braves against LHP Kodi Medeiros (0-5, 6.04) for the Barons. First pitch is set for 7:05 pm with coverage beginning at 6:50 pm on 103.9 WYAB, TuneIn Radio, MiLB First Pitch app. and MiLB.TV (subscription required).
