Barons Topple Lookouts 10-5 in Series Opener

Birmingham, Ala. - The Birmingham Barons picked up a 10-5 win in their series opener against the Chattanooga Lookouts Sunday in front of 5,204 fans at Regions Field.

The Barons jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the first highlighted by a solo home run off the bat of Rangel Ravelo, his 11th long ball of the season.

The lead ballooned to 7-1 in the second starting with RBI base hits by Chris Curley and Dan Black. Lookouts starter Andres Santiago (4-8, 5.02) plunked Ravelo with the following pitch and was throw out of the game by home plate umpire RyanAdditon. Reliever Mike Thomas relieved Santiago and promptly allowed a bases-clearing double to Jason Coats extending the lead to 7-1.

A potent Lookouts offense would not be deterred, scoring four runs in the top of the fifth against starter Tony Bucciferro (2-2, 6.45) on a two-run home run by Scott Schebler, an RBI triple by O'Koyea Dickson and a run scoring double by Chris O'Brien cutting the lead to 7-5.

Three runs in the seventh inning extended the lead to 10-5 with the inning highlighted by a two-run single by Michael Earley and an RBI double by Martin Medina.

A resurgent Barons bullpen consisting of Braulio Ortiz, Kevin Vance and Jefferson Olacio allowed just four hits over 4.0 scoreless innings in relief of Bucciferro.

With the win the Barons improved to 56-70 on the season and 27-29 in the second half while Chattanooga fell to 52-72 on the year and 26-28 in the second half.

The Barons will look match their longest winning streak of the season tomorrow night as RHP Mike Recchia (5-4, 3.32)takes the hill against RHP Nick Struck (4-6, 5.91). First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM CDT.
