Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Barons are partnering with the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation and the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation Friday, June 26 to raise awareness of ovarian cancer. The Barons will wear teal jerseys to be auctioned off with proceeds benefiting the foundations' mission of early detection.

"The Barons are happy to go to bat against ovarian cancer," Barons General Manager Jonathan Said. "Partnering with the Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation and the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation, we hope to raise awareness of a disease many may not be familiar with or even know about."

Fans are encouraged to wear teal, the color of ovarian cancer awareness, to the 7:05 p.m. Friday contest. In addition, survivors will join the Barons as they take the field during lineup announcements and the National Anthem as the Field of Dreams Team, and a survivor is set to throw out the game's first pitch. The "Birmingham" sign on the 14th Street side of Regions Field will be teal for the evening.

"We are excited to partner with the Birmingham Barons for this event," said Mary Anne King, Executive Director of the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation. "Our hope is that it will provide us with an avenue to increase awareness and shine a light on ovarian and other gynecologic cancers while giving our stakeholders a fun night out at the baseball game."

Ovarian cancer is the fifth leading cause of death among women in the United States and occurs in 1 of every 71 women, but more than 90% of those survive longer than five years when it is detected early. Sadly, only 19% of women are diagnosed in the early stages.

"We are so excited to be partnering with the Barons and the Laura Crandall Brown Foundation to turn Regions Field teal and spread awareness about ovarian cancer," said Susan Green, Executive Director for Norma Livingston Ovarian Cancer Foundation. "Together with community partners like the Barons we are making a difference for our mothers, daughters, sisters, and friends."

The game-worn jerseys will be auctioned off during the game on the concourse by silent auction. Each bid sheet will feature the name and number of the player wearing the jersey. Each jersey will be signed and awarded to the winner of the auction. Unworn jerseys will also be available for bid.
