Montgomery Biscuits News Release

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Jason Bourgeois lined a bases-loaded game-winning single to deep right-center in the bottom in the tenth inning, lifting the host Birmingham Barons (9-2) to a 2-1 extra-inning win over the Montgomery Biscuits (6-5).

The two squads combined for 13 hits and 11 walks in the game, leaving a total of 21 men on base (12 stranded by the Biscuits).

Ricardo Nanita led off the tenth with a base hit to center field off Biscuits reliever Nick DeBarr (2-2), Montgomery's third pitcher of the game. With the Biscuits' corner infielders charging for an expected bunt, Robert Valido pulled his bat back and chopped a high bouncer over the head of third baseman Evan Longoria for a crucial double, moving Nanita to third. Montgomery intentionally walked leadoff hitter Chris Getz, setting the stage for Bourgeois to play hero.

Edwardo Sierra (1-1), the fourth Barons pitcher of the evening, earned the victory after hurling a scoreless top of the tenth.

The late drama followed an excellent pair of starting performances. Birmingham's Adam Russell scattered six singles over five innings, allowing only an Evan Longoria RBI single in the third.

Montgomery's Chris Seddon topped his counterpart, giving up just one hit through seven dominant innings. That one hit was enough for the Barons, as Cory Aldridge's fifth inning leadoff single led to a Donny Lucy sacrifice fly that knotted the game at 1-1.

Seddon came out to begin the eighth inning, but departed after two consecutive hard singles to right field left runners at the corners with no one out. Reliever Brett Wayne kept the game tied, inducing a pop-out from pinch-hitter Nanita and, after walking Valido to load the bases, striking out Getz and coaxing a fielder's choice from Bourgeois.

No worries for the announced home crowd of 2,001: two innings later, the Birmingham outfielder came through when it counted.

The Biscuits and the Barons play the second game of their five-game set at 7:05 p.m. Tuesday night. Righthander Derek Feldkamp (0-1, 5.59) gets the start for Montgomery, opposed by Birmingham lefty Gio Gonzalez (2-0, 1.74).
