Cleveland Barons News Release
CLEVELAND, OH - Three point nights from Barons Josh Hennessy and Lukas Kaspar were spoiled on Thursday night as the team lost to Syracuse 4-3 in overtime. The overtime lost put an end to the Barons franchise record winning streak on home ice at five games.
Both teams put their two-game winning steak on the line with a strong defensive first period of play. There were no goals scored but the Crunch out-shot the Barons 12-6 in the period. Jamie Holden, seeking to extend his franchise record winning streak to six games made all 12-saves through the opening twenty minutes. Pascal LeClaire returned from injury, after missing the last two games, and made six saves.
Both teams exchanged goals during the middle frame for a 1-1 tie after two periods of play. Doug Murray's strong body checking freed up a puck for Hennessy, who then set up Barons rookie forward Kaspar for his fourth goal of the year and a 1-0 lead. Syracuse answered late in the period with a power play goal from Brian Gornick, who had a puck deflect off his chest and behind a sprawled out Holden.
Both teams exchanged two goals apiece in the third period as the game would extend into overtime. The Barons Grant Stevenson scored his team leading 7th of the year on assists from Hennessy to tie the game at 2-2. Shane Joseph then scored his second power play goal in as many games to re-establish the Barons one-goal lead at 3-2. Hennessy and Kaspar assisted on the Joseph goal. Syracuse would not skate quietly into the night as Brandon Sugden tied the game with a wrist shot that alluded Holden at the 15:46 mark of the final frame.
Syracuse stole two points on the road with a power play goal from Joakim Lindstrom at the 4:12 mark of the sudden death frame. Barons forward Patrick Rissmiller was penalized for goaltender interference at the 2:14 mark of overtime leading to the heroics by Lindstrom, who scored his third of the year.
Tomorrow night the Barons travel to Grand Rapids for the first of a home-and-home series against the North Division leader. The two teams skate into Cleveland on Saturday for a rematch at 7 O'clock.
