Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL – With the second-half Western Division title already under lock and key, the Birmingham Barons welcomed the Greenville Braves to town for the final series of the season. With the outcome not affecting any races, the Barons lost a close extra-inning game by the score of 3-2 in front of 4,545 fans on Friday evening.

The Barons took an early 2-0 lead off Greenville starter Derrick Lewis with single runs in the fourth and fifth innings, on RBI singles by Steve Morales and Gabe Alvarez but couldn't maintain the lead. The G-Braves tied the score with a two-run sixth after James Jurries and Greg Miller each singled home a run off Barons starter Byeong An.

A well played game early on came down to some late inning controversy. With the score knotted at 2-2 in the top of the eleventh inning, reliever Ryan Meaux retired Jurries on a groundout before giving up a one-out single to Richard Lewis. With Lewis leading off of first, Meaux made a throw over to first but was called for a balk by first-base umpire John Woods. Meaux took exception to the go-ahead run moving into scoring position and was ejected by Woods for arguing the call. Barons' manager Wally Backman then entered the playing field to protest and was also ejected for arguing. Jeff Bajenaru relieved Meaux but he gave up an RBI single to Cory Aldridge that plated Lewis from second. Lewis's run would be the difference in the game as the Barons were unable to mount an attack in the bottom half of the inning.

After the game, Backman voiced his displeasure with the way the game ended and hated to lose the game on such a controversial call.

Meaux (1-2) picked up the loss after giving up one run in 1.1 innings and Willaim Collazo (6-2) took the win after throwing 1.2 innings. Billy Sylvester registered his 18 save after tossing a scoreless eleventh.
