Mobile BayBears News Release
Jackson, Tenn. â The West Tenn Diamond Jaxx took advantage of an eighth inning error to score Saturday's only run, defeating the BayBears 1-0.
With one out in the bottom of the eighth, BayBears third baseman Danny Bravo bobbled Donnie Hood's grounder, allowing Hood to reach base. Reliever Jose Nunez then walked Blair Barbier and gave up an RBI single to Casey Kopitzke for the game's only run.
"You have to give Casey credit," BayBears manager Craig Colbert said. "He got a good pitch and he hit it."
The Bravo error broke up a string of 19 consecutive batters retired by Mobile pitchers Roger Deago, Rene Miniel, and Nunez.
Deago got the start for the BayBears and was near perfect. The left-hander threw six innings, allowing just one hit and no runs while striking out seven hitters.
The BayBears threatened only twice in the game themselves. They left Jason Clements at third base in the top of the sixth. In the eighth, Bravo and Clements led off with singles followed by a sacrifice bunt by pinch-hitter Chris Rojas. However, relievers Sergio Mitre and Felix Sanchez retired Todd Donovan and Vinnie Faison respectively to get out of the jam.
"Donovan hit the ball hard but it went right to the pitcher," Colbert said. "Then Sanchez threw some nasty pitches to Vinnie and that was it.
"It is never a good thing to give up just two hits and lose."
The BayBears and Diamond Jaxx will play game three of their series Sunday afternoon at 2:05. Chris Oxspring (10-5; 2.62) will get the start for Mobile. Oxspring leads all active Southern League pitchers in ERA this season.
