Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL – On Saturday evening at the Hoover Met Corwin Malone picked up his second win in as many starts since rejoining the Barons last week from Single-A Kannapolis. The southpaw tossed seven innings and gave up just two runs on seven hits while striking out a season-high seven batters as the Barons beat the Greenville Braves 4-3 in front of 5,345 fans.

Malone (4-2) started the season as the number six prospect in the White Sox organization, according Baseball America, and was highly touted to make a big splash in the Southern League. Unfortunately for Malone and the Barons, the season did not go quite the way it was planned. After his first six starts, Malone was 2-2 with a 7.16 ERA and on the D.L. with elbow problems. He spent the next few months rehabbing in North Carolina and then was sent to low-A Kannapolis to right the ship. When the Barons found themselves one starter short going into the last few weeks of the season, Malone got the call and has been solid ever since, including tonight's strong outing.

The G-Braves took an early two-run lead on a pair of RBI groundouts by Charles Thomas with one coming in the third and the other in the fifth but Birmingham would bounce back with four unanswered runs of their own to take a 4-2 lead. Carlos Maldonado crushed a solo homer down the left-field line in the fifth, Jeremy Reed drove in a run on an infield single in the sixth and Tommy Nicholson delivered a pinch-hit two-run single in the seventh to cap the Barons' scoring.

Greenville would add a run in the eighth on an RBI double by Cory Aldridge but would be stopped there as three Barons relievers shut the door on the Braves. Ryan Meaux tossed a scoreless ninth to register his second save of the season and Brett Evert (4-9) picked up the loss after giving up all four runs in seven innings.
