Cleveland Barons News Release

CLEVELAND, OH -- Matt Carkner's first game-winning goal of the season led the Barons to a 5-4 overtime win over the Manitoba Moose on Sunday. The win by the Barons matched a franchise record as their fifth straight on home ice.

The Manitoba Moose posted the game's opening two goals on their way to a 2-1 lead after the opening twenty minutes of action. Craig Darby converted on the power play for the Moose scoring the game's opening tally with assists from Sven Butenschon and and Jesse Schultz. Former Barons forward Jason Jaffray then extended the Moose lead to 2-0 snapping a loose puck over the shoulder of Cleveland goaltender Nolan Schaefer. The Barons trimmed the lead in half with defenseman Aaron Power scoring his first goal at the AHL level at the 16:52 mark on assists from Steve Bernier and Patrick Rissmiller. The assist by Bernier extended his season long point streak to eight games. The Barons out-shot Manitoba 8-7 through the first period.

Jason King, playing his first professional game in more than 10-months scored twice in the second period for Manitoba, but it wasn't enough to maintain their lead as the Barons scored three goals in a 4-4 deadlock after forty minutes. King scored his first of the frame just 71-seconds into the period re-establishing the Moose two-goal lead at 3-1. The Barons responded with three consecutive goals from Lukas Kaspar, Steve Bernier and Garrett Stafford. Kaspar's goal was an unassisted short-handed tally, the team's fourth goal of the season scored while killing a penalty. Josh Hennessy, Patrick Rissmiller, Shane Joseph and Josh Prudden all earned assists during the period. The team's combined for 34 penalty minutes in the second period. Wade Flaherty replaced Sebastien Centomo in the Manitoba goal at the 7:23 mark of the second period following the Cleveland goal by Bernier.

A scoreless third period would force an overtime period. Manitoba out-shot the Barons 13-11 in the final period of regulation but both goaltenders held strong.

In the extra frame the Barons wasted little time getting a game-winning goal from Matt Carkner at the 42-second mark of the overtime period. Lukas Kaspar and Tim Conboy assisted on the tally, Carkner's fourth of the season.

The Barons begin a seven game road trip Tuesday night at Iowa with an 8pm start against the Stars. All the games during the road trip can be heard live through the Barons web site, www.clevelandbarons.net. The Barons then return to home ice on January 25th against Omaha with a start time scheduled for 7 o'clock.
