CHARLOTTE, N.C. - Scoring two goals and registering 20 of their 35 shots in the first period, the Charlotte Checkers knocked off the Oklahoma City Barons 4-2 Thursday night at Time Warner Cable Arena.

Charlotte opened the game's scoring at 4:30 of the first period when Carter Sandlak sent a shot from just beyond the left circle that caromed off the pads of Barons goalie Laurent Brossoit and right to Jared Staal, who flipped the puck into an open right side of the Oklahoma City net.

At 8:56 of the first, Chad LaRose extended the Checkers' lead to 2-0 when he jammed the rebound of a Brock McGinn shot past a sprawling Brossoit.

Oklahoma City cut the deficit to one goal 1:29 into the second period when Charlotte goalie John Muse's save of a Mitch Moroz shot rebounded to a streaking Andrew Miller, who gathered the puck and fired it just beyond the Checkers goalie's left pad.

Charlotte once again took a two-goal lead at the 13:51 mark of the second when a centering pass by McGinn to the middle of the OKC slot found Danny Biega who scored on a second attempt after his initial shot was blocked just in front of the Barons net.

The Barons once again made it a one-goal game on the power play at 13:51 of the third. Ten seconds after Biega was whistled for a hooking penalty at 9:14, Barons captain Anton Lander picked up a loose puck in front of the Checkers net and wristed a shot past Muse, making it a 3-2 game. The goal extended Lander's current point streak to four games.

Despite registering 12 of its 24 total shots in the third period, Oklahoma City was unable to tie the game, and Charlotte's Ben Holmstrom added an empty-net goal with 38 seconds left in regulation to give the Checkers the 4-2 win.

The Barons return to Oklahoma City next for a two game series against the Rockford IceHogs that begins with a 7 p.m. start on Saturday, Dec. 20 at the Cox Convention Center.
