IceCaps Thumped 5-2 by Bulldogs

The St. John's IceCaps started strong but dropped a 5-2 decision to the Hamilton Bulldogs at FirstOntario Centre Wednesday night.

Carl Klingberg and John Albert scored for St. John's, while goaltender Peter Budaj made 26 saves.

The IceCaps had a 15-12 edge on the shot clock and a 1-0 lead on the scoreboard as Klingberg dented the twine 11:08 into the game. He took two whacks at the puck in front of Bulldogs starter Mike Condon and potted his own rebound for his eighth goal of the season, with assists going to Albert and Mike Cornell.

Early in the second period, Jarred Tinordi flattened Albert with a clean, open-ice hit, prompting Cornell to drop the gloves with the big defenceman. With Cornell in the penalty box for instigating, the Bulldogs tied the game on the power play as Mac Bennett fired a shot on goal from the point that beat Budaj low on the glove side with 14:03 left in the second.

Christian Thomas gave the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead with 9:15 left in the second period as he sent a wrister from the top of the circle that beat a screened Budaj.

Bennett picked up his second of the game and the eventual game-winner on the power play with 16:52 left in the contest as he tapped in a perfect tape-to-tape pass from Daniel Carr to give his team a 3-1 lead.

Davis Drewiske added the Bulldogs' fourth goal of the night with just over 12 minutes remaining in the game as he beat Budaj through the five-hole for his second goal of the season.

Albert closed the gap with his ninth of the year with just over four minutes remaining but the Bulldogs' Jake Dowell added an empty netter in the final minute to seal the victory.

The IceCaps will face the Bulldogs again on Friday at FirstOntario Centre in Hamilton for their final contest before the Christmas break. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. E.T.
