Birmingham Barons News Release

BIRMINGHAM, AL – The Birmingham Barons won their fifth straight as they beat the Chattanooga Lookouts by the score of 5-3 in front of 2,339 fans at the Hoover Met on Sunday evening. The victory coupled with a Huntsville loss moves the Barons a half game in front of the Stars for the Western Division lead.

Barons starter, Carlos Castillo (1-1) threw six solid innings in the victory, giving up just two runs on four hits, and benefited from a four-run second inning by the hot Barons bats.

In the second, three straight singles by Scott Bikowski, Carlos Maldonado, and Jon Hamilton lead to the first run and was followed by an RBI groundout by Josh Shaffer and a two-run single by Chad Durham to stack the Barons to an early 4-0 lead. Birmingham moved to a 5-0 lead late in the game as Gabe Alvarez singled home a run in the bottom of the fifth. All five runs came off of Lookouts starter Josh Hall (7-9) who took the loss after throwing six innings and giving up nine hits.

The Lookouts would claw back into the game on a two-run homer by Guye Senjem in the sixth and an RBI groundout by Jeff Bannon in the ninth to make the score 5-3 but Jeff Bajenaru slammed the door in the ninth to pick up his 11th save of the season.

The Barons look to keep the winning ways going as they send out RHP Enemencio Pacheco (11-2, 2.55) to face LHP John Koronka (7-13, 3.91). All the action can be heard on 101.1 FM "The Source" with Curt Bloom on the play-by-play.
