August 17, 2003 - Southern League (SL1)
Mississippi Braves News Release
GREENVILLE, SC - Kelly Johnson went a combined 5-6 with a homerun, three doubles, and five RBIs as the Greenville Braves used good pitching and timely hitting in taking both games of Saturday night's doubleheader from the Carolina Mudcats at Greenville Municipal Stadium. The G-Braves captured game one 11-2 behind a complete game from starter Adam Wainwright (8-7) and won the night cap 3-1 as Roman Colon (11-3) picked up the win to put him in a tie for second in the Southern League win column.
In game one, the Mudcats jumped on Wainwright for a pair in the first, but the tall righthander would settle down and scatter five hits over the next six frames.
The Greenville bats caught fire in the third with three straight doubles capped by Johnson's two RBI two-bagger. In the fourth, the G-Braves hammered Carolina starter Randy Messenger (5-7) and the Mudcat defense for five unearned runs highlighted by Johnson's two-run bomb to right center. Greenville tacked on three more runs in the following inning on Greg Miller's first homerun of his professional career to cap off the scoring.
Game two saw the G-Braves stake a two-run advantage in the second as Richard Lewis and Cory Aldridge drew back-to-back walks and came around to score on a Pete Orr double. The Mudcats got a solo homerun from Chip Ambres in the fourth off of starter John Ennis, but that would be all for the visitors. Johnson gave Greenville an insurance run in the fifth with his third double of the night that plated James Jurries.
Billy Sylvester pitched the seventh in game two for his 14th save of the season.
