Birmingham Barons News Release
BIRMINGHAM, AL â Five different Barons hit home runs to account for a franchise record-tying six home runs as the Birmingham Barons dismantled the Tennessee Smokies 13-7 on Thursday afternoon in front of 6,479 fans at Smokies Park. The resounding victory earned the Barons a split of the four-game series and a winning road trip of 4-3.
The six home runs were hit by infielders Rob Sasser, Ruddy Yan, and Mike Morse and outfielders Nate Murphy and Darren Blakely. Blakely connected for two bombs on the day with each coming from opposite sides of the plate. The monster feat tied the team's all-time franchise record that was previously set on two occasions (9/1/01 vs West Tenn & 7/13/64 vs New Orleans).
Barons' starter, Arnie Munoz (3-0), was the beneficiary of the offensive explosion as he picked up his third win in as many starts after tossing 5.1 innings and giving up four runs on five hits and striking out six. The loss went to Tennessee starter Josh Axelton (0-2) after giving up seven runs on eight hits including four home runs over four innings.
On the day, the Barons smacked out a season-high 19 hits, eight of them for extra bases, to go along with their season-high 13 runs. The six homers brings the Pull-A-Part "Pulling Against Child Abuse" home run total to an impressive $1,700 in just the first 13 games of the season.
The Barons now return home for a brief four-game home stand versus the Greenville Braves. Game one is tomorrow night at 7:00 PM as Birmingham will send out RHP Tetsu Yofu (1-0, 1.80) to face LHP Macay McBride (0-1, 6.28). You can catch all the action on 101.1 FM "The Source" with Curt Bloom on the call.
