Sevierville, Tenn. - The Birmingham Barons came one home run shy of tying a Southern League record in a 13-7 win over Tennessee before 6,479 in a Thursday D.A.R.E. Day matinee.
Birmingham connected for six home runs on the afternoon, including four against starter Josh Axelson (0-2). Rudy Yan's two-run homer in the second inning pushed the Barons to a 5-0 lead. Darren Blakely hit a solo shot in the first, and connected again in the seventh on a three run blast.
Arnie Munoz (3-0) remained undefeated with the win.
Nate Espy tripled and doubled for the SMoies and Papo Bolivar added a pair of singles as Tennessee pouned out 10 hits against a beleaguerd Birmingham bullpen.
Tennessee returns home Wednesday, May 5 to take on Walters State Community college in an exhibition game. The Smokies begin a 12-game road trip Friday at Huntsville with Brad Thompson (1-0) pitching opposite Mike Jones (0-1, 6.60).
