Montgomery Biscuits News Release
BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The Biscuits (38-41/10-7) squandered a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the fifth, and the Birmingham Barons (41-45/10-7) came back to bludgeon the Biscuits, 10-2, on Saturday night at Regions Field.
Sean Burke made his 10th start of the season for the Barons, and the righty faced the minimum in the top of the first, striking our Greg Jones swinging.
Mason Montgomery made his Double-A debut on the other side for the Biscuits, and the southpaw matched Burke's one-two-three top of the first with one of his own in the bottom of the first.
Burke struck out the side in the top of the second, but Niko Hulsizer reached on catcher's interference and then Roberto Alvarez eventually brought him in with an RBI-single to make it 1-0 Biscuits early. Montgomery walked two batters in the bottom of the second, but also struck out the side getting Craig Dedelow, Moises Castillo, and Ian Dawkins-all swinging.
Burke walked a couple more batters and allowed a single to Jones in the top of the third, but still kept the Biscuits off the board as the Butter and Blue stranded runners at the corners. Montgomery allowed a pair of two-out singles in the bottom of the third, but struck out Evan Skoug and Dedelow again to keep it a 1-0 game.
Jordan Qsar crushed a solo home run 469 feet to right-center to lead off the top of the fourth and double the Biscuits lead to 2-0. Montgomery fired in a scoreless bottom of the fourth, striking out his sixth batter before handing the reins over to Josh Roberson (2-4) after the Biscuits could not score against Felix Paulino (4-4) in the top of the fifth.
Roberson allowed eight runs on seven hits in the bottom of the fifth and was lifted for Zack Trageton with two outs in the inning. Jose Rodriguez's two-run double tied the game at two, and then Dedelow's RBI-single made it 3-2 Barons. J.J. Muno's two-run single made it 5-2 later in the inning, and then Skoug's three-run blast to right ended Roberson's night and made it 8-2 Birmingham.
Once Trageton got out of the fifth, the Biscuits did not score against Paulino in the top of the sixth. The Barons added another run in the bottom of the sixth courtesy of a Castillo sac fly to make it 9-2 Birmingham.
Sammy Peralta worked a scoreless top of the seventh with a strikeout, and then Jose Lopez allowed an RBI-double to Raudy Read to make it 10-2 Barons in the bottom of the seventh. Peralta spun a scoreless eighth, and then Lopez did the same in the bottom half. Taylor Broadway struck out the side in the top of the ninth to end the game.
The Biscuits will try to salvage a series split when Evan McKendry (0-4) opens against Scott Blewett (4-3) in Sunday's finale at 4:00 PM CT.
The Biscuits are in the middle of a six-game road trip, but will return to Riverwalk Stadium after the All-Star break for a three-game series against the Mississippi Braves for Gump Weekend beginning on Friday, July 22 at 6:35 PM CT when there will be an Adult Greenbow Biscuits Replica Jersey Giveaway presented by Direct Auto Insurance.
The rest of the series will include Fitness Night & MAX Fireworks on Saturday, July 23 at 6:05 PM CT, and a Kids Replica Jersey Giveaway presented by Hyundai Motor Manufacturing of Alabama & Bark in the Park on Sunday, July 24 at 3:33 PM CT.
