July 16, 2022 - Southern League (SL)
Knoxville Smokies News Release
KODAK, Tenn. - The Tennessee Smokies (46-40, 9-8) clinched a series-win over the Biloxi Shuckers (39-45, 5-12) 4-3 Saturday night at Smokies Stadium. The win marked the Smokies' first series-victory of the second half of the season, and they improved to 10-1 against the Southern League South at home this season.
Matt Mervis and Alexander Canario were the heroes again for the Smokies, as they were responsible for all four of Tennessee's runs. Mervis opened the scoring with a two-run double in the third inning off Victor Castaneda (L, 1-5), and Canario launched his fourth home run of the series in the sixth to put Tennessee up 4-0.
The Shuckers scored three times in the final two innings against Graham Lawson and Danis Correa (S, 4), but Correa closed out the game to save a brilliant outing from RHP Walker Powell (W, 1-2), who earned his first Double-A win. Powell went five scoreless innings of one-hit baseball.
The Smokies will play their regular-season finale against the Biloxi Shuckers Sunday afternoon at Smokies Stadium. First pitch is set for 2 p.m. when the Smokies send 2021 first-round pick LHP Jordan Wicks (0-0, 0.00) to the mound for his Smokies debut against RHP T.J. Shook (2-1, 5.12). Fans can catch the action on 99.1 The Sports Animal or by visiting https://www.milb.com/tennessee/fans/audio-listen-live.
The Smokies will give away a 3/4 Tee to the first 1,00 fans on Sunday, July 17, in addition to Family Funday. For tickets, call the box office at (865) 286-2300 or visit smokiesbaseball.com.
