Lancaster Stormers News Release

The Lancaster Barnstormers slugged five home runs on Tuesday night, but they won a marathon game without putting the bat on the ball.

A bizarre combination of Road Warriors miscues allowed the tying and winning runs to score as the 'Stormers outlasted the travel squad, 8-7, in 13 innings as play ended on Wednesday morning at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Lancaster fell behind, 7-6, in the top of the 13th inning on a Daniel Aldrich sacrifice fly that followed a bad hop single off the shoulder of third baseman Josh Bell by Osvaldo Martinez. That single advanced pinch runner Melvin Rodriguez-Ortiz to third with one out.

The Barnstormers were able to recover. Ryan Casteel beat out an infield single to start the home 13th. Jimmy Paredes waited through a walk from Julio De Paula (0-2), and K.C. Hobson punched a broken bat single to right to load the bases.

Then, with Vladimir Frias batting, DePaula and catcher Isaac Wenrich misconnected on a 1-2 pitch. Casteel raced home to score the tying run. Wenrich tried to make a hurried throw to the plate, a toss which deflected off Casteel back toward the backstop allowing Paredes to romp home as well with the winning run.

Until then, the Barnstormers kept fighting back with the long ball. A pair of unearned runs in the fourth and a homer by Aldrich in the fifth put the Barnstormers down, 3-0.

Hobson took care of one run with a blast to right center leading off the bottom of the fifth. Lancaster tacked on a second run on an RBI single by Paredes in the sixth.

The Road Warriors took the lead into the bottom of the eighth before Blake Gailen and Casteel connected on back-to-back homers and a 4-3 lead.

Two bunt singles, a grounder into left and a bases loaded walk to Gustavo Pierre tied the game in the ninth before Matt Reynolds could coax a 1-2-3 double play our of Jose Julio-Ruiz to close down the inning.

The Road Warriors grabbed the lead again in the top of the tenth inning as Edwin Gomez lined a two-run shot onto the picnic deck off Kevin Munson.

Andrew Johnston was two outs from nailing down his own win when the Barnstormers went back-to-back for the second time in the game, with Bell hitting the back ad wall and Gailen finding the Haller tent for the second time in the contest.

The two clubs meet again on Wednesday night with Joe Gardner (3-7) matching up against Alberto Rodriguez (0-1). Fans may tune into BRC-11 or the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 7:00.
