Lancaster Stormers News Release
Just about all of Tuesday night's runs came in a prolonged fifth inning. The Barnstormers just happened to score more.
Lancaster countered a two-run Southern Maryland top of the fifth, stringing five hits together for four tallies in the bottom of the inning, producing a 5-2 victory over the Blue Crabs at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
With the victory, the Barnstormers climbed above .500 for the first time since losing at Sugar Land on May 3.
Lancaster grabbed a 1-0 lead in the fourth on Travis Denker's dribbler up the third base line that scored Blake Gailen, who led off the inning with a double.
Southern Maryland quickly struck back against Will Savage (4-4). Brian Barton led off with a long single off the right field wall and advanced to second on Savage's second balk of the night. Mike Richard moved Barton to third with a bunt, and Jose Julio-Ruiz lined a single just over Savage's glove to score the first run. Ryan Mulhern and Cyle Hankerd added singles to load the bases. Julio-Ruiz crossed the plate on a long sacrifice fly to the left field corner by Cesar Nicolas.
Gabriel Hernandez (0-8) retired Gustavo Molina on a fly ball to deep left center to open the fifth inning but walked Austin Gallagher and gave up a double to right center by Kody Kirkland.
Blue Crabs' manager played his hand of cards to get out of the inning. Left-hander Logan Williamson was summoned to face Gailen, who brought Gallagher home with a grounder to second, tying the game. Osborn went back to his bullpen for Beau Vaughan, but the former Barnstormer never got an out. Olmo Rosario steamed a single into left to score Kirkland for a 3-2 edge. Denker dumped a single down the right field line, moving Rosario to third, and Daryle Ward picked up the third straight hit with a wicked one-hopper off the glove of second baseman Wladimir Sutil, giving Lancaster a two-run cushion.
Ryan Harvey greeted Kyle Mertins with a single ripped into left to score Denker.
Savage worked through six, allowing 11 hits but no walks, before turning the game over to the bullpen. Interim manager Lance Burkhart used four relievers to span three innings. Jason Urquidez, the final of the foursome, notched his seventh save in as many tries.
Lancaster will take on Southern Maryland again on Wednesday evening. The Barnstormers will send lefty Horacio Ramirez (2-0) to the hill to square off against fellow southpaw Wade Korpi (1-0). Game time is 7:00. Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app, beginning at 6:45.
