LANCASTER, Pa.-The Lancaster Barnstormers are focused on fundraising. The club unveiled a new risk-free fundraising program this week, in meetings with organizers of local non-profits and youth athletic leagues. The club believes the new program, combined with several established fundraisers, will help raise more than $250,000 in support of community programs this year.

"Fundraising with the Barnstormers" is a web-based system that enables the club to track how many tickets have been purchased on behalf of a select non-profit group. Each ticket purchased using the group's "fundraising code" will generate between $4 and $4.50 for the organization.

"We created this program as a response to the soaring number of fundraising requests we're getting. During these tough economic times, charitable money is drying up," Barnstormers president Jon Danos said. "We needed to design another program to meet the demand and help."

The fundraising program fits groups of all shapes and sizes, from church groups to large foundations, from small athletic teams to district athletic councils. The American Cancer Society and Manheim Township Baseball and Softball Association are among the first groups to sign up for the program.

"No money down-all a group needs to do is select a game date," Barnstormers general manager Vince Bulik said. "We'll provide a kit including flyers and other materials to help distribute the special fundraising code. Sure beats going door-to-door selling fundraisers."

Once a group has sold 100 tickets, $4 of each sale will go to the non-profit, up to 500 tickets sold. When the group reaches 500 tickets sold, $4.50 of each ticket sale-half the value of a regular Barnstormers field box ticket-will go to support the organization. For example, if a group sells just 250 tickets, it will raise $1,000 for the organization. A group that can sell 1,000 game tickets will raise $4,500, all without any money down.

"We designed this program to be risk-free for community groups," Danos said. "In all my years in baseball, I've never seen a fundraising concept quite like this."

To select a game and set up a fundraising code, groups can call 509-4487 and ask for any Barnstormers group events coordinator. The program will apply for any home game in 2009, based on availability.

Fundraising with the Barnstormers joins several programs that have been in place since the club's inception. The team will again share concessions proceeds with non-profit groups who volunteer to work in the concessions stands. The popular program, which helps raise nearly $100,000 every year, typically fills up in January.

The Barnstormers are again developing specialty jersey auctions for several theme nights in '09. Each year, the club raises $20,000 or more through these types of fundraisers.

The Barnstormers will open the 2009 baseball season at home for the fourth year in a row, when they host the Newark Bears on Thursday, April 23 at 7:05 p.m. Tickets to Opening Night and all other games in the 2009 season will go on sale Saturday, March 7 in the Clipper Magazine Stadium box office only.
