Lancaster Stormers News Release
The swarm of Skeeters overtook Clipper Magazine Stadium this week.
Sugar Land played a flawless game on Thursday night, putting away the Barnstormers with a five-run top of the ninth to complete a series sweep with an 8-1 victory in front of 6,807 at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
Jason Lane (6-3), whom the Barnstormers had reached for 11 runs in 11 2/3 innings in two prior matchups this season, limited Lancaster to six hits and a run over seven innings Thursday evening. The former Houston Astros outfielder did not walk a batter and struck out three. Only once did Lancaster have two runners aboard at the same time. That occurred in the fifth when Kody Kirkland singled into left with one out, and Jerry Owens grounded a two-out single up the middle.
Daryle Ward produced Lancaster's only tally of the night with a two-out homer in the sixth.
Sugar Land opened the scoring in the second when Travis Scott belted a leadoff homer to right off Brian Grening (4-6). A double by Russ Mitchell and single by Kevin Rios combined to produce a second run.
The Skeeters' lead grew to 3-0 in the third when Jeff Dominguez cranked a single to right and scored on Aaron Bates' double to right center. Following an intentional walk of Scott, Grening was lifted in favor of Will Savage. Savage kept Sugar Land off the board for the next four innings. Brodie Downs and Ross Peeples combined to place two more zeroes on the scoreboard, sending the game to the ninth with Lancaster only trailing by two.
Sugar Land erupted for five. Dominguez drilled a double into the right field corner. Bates knocked him across with a single bounced over second base. The next two hitters walked, and, following a force play at the plate, Koby Clemens roped a three-run double to left. Rios singled into center to produce the final Sugar Land run.
Lancaster heads to York to open a three-game series at Sovereign Bank Stadium on Friday at 6:30. Rich Rundles returns to a Barnstormers uniform for the Friday start. He will match up against fellow left-hander Rick Zagone (2-2). Fans may tune into 1390-AM, WLAN; 1600-AM, WPDC; 1390wlan.com or the I Heart Radio cell phone app beginning at 6:15.
NOTES: Blake Gailen stretched his hitting streak to 11 games with a double in the third...Gailen has 13 extra base hits in the last 10 games...He left the game in the late innings due to feeling ill...Owens has hit safely in five straight and 24 of 26...Ward has five homers and 18 RBI in his last 14 games...Lancaster is 3-10 against Sugar Land this season...The Skeeters have made only two errors in the season series.
