DES MOINES - The Iowa Barnstormers have signed defensive back Matt Goldsmith to their 2017 roster, Head Coach Dixie Wooten announced today.

Goldsmith (6-1, 200, Illinois State) returns to the Iowa Barnstormers for his second season with the team. The four-year letter winner for the Illinois State Redbirds joined the Barnstormers for his rookie Indoor Football League (IFL) season in 2015. Goldsmith was a break out defensive star. In 14 games, Goldsmith collected 51.5 total tackles, 7 pass breakups, and 4 interceptions returning one for a touchdown.

Prior to the start of the 2016 season, Goldsmith signed a free-agent contract with the Ottawa Redblacks of the Canadian Football League (CFL) where he ultimately spent the season.

"Signing Matt is huge for our defense," said Coach Wooten. "He is proven in the IFL and got a chance to see things on a higher level. His size and versatility make him a great player. He will come in hungry to win."

Goldsmith will return to Des Moines in February to enter the Barnstormers 2017 training camp.
