Lancaster Stormers News Release
LANCASTER, Pa.- The Lancaster Barnstormers had the services of catcher Salomon Manriquez for only eight games in 2010. It was enough for fans to know just what the Venezuela native can do with a bat in his hands.
Manriquez was re-signed by the Barnstormers for the 2011 season along with right-handed reliever Justin Segal, who put up splendid numbers in the Golden League last season.
The 27-year old receiver was acquired by Lancaster from York in exchange for right-hander John Muller and catcher Adam Witter on May 25. In his eight-game stint with the Barnstormers, he hit .333 with a home run and four RBI before leaving to join the New York Mets organization. He hit .281 with four homers and 15 RBI in 37 games for Class AA Binghamton and Class AAA Buffalo after his departure.
Manriquez signed with the Montreal Expos at the age of 18 in 2001. He advanced slowly through their system, but finally had the opportunity to play everyday with Class A Potomac in 2005. He hit .287 with 15 homers and 68 RBI that season and followed that up with three solid seasons at Class AA with the Nationals, the Mets and the Rangers. In that time, the right-handed hitter combined to bat .266 with an average of 10 homers and 42 RBI.
He made his first Atlantic League impression with the Newark Bears in 2009, hitting .311 with seven homers and 51 RBI. Manriquez ranked near the league lead in batting for much of that season.
Segal, 26, signed with the New York Yankees out of UC-Santa Barbara in 2007 but was released after just one season. The native Californian was picked up by Long Beach in 2008, but it was over the last two seasons that he dazzled the opposing batters in the typically hitter-friendly Golden League. With Long Beach in 2009, Segal went 2-1 with two saves and a 1.23 ERA. He joined Chico last season and his numbers improved even more with a 3-2 record, five saves and a 0.92 ERA. He allowed fewer than a baserunner per inning both seasons.
"Salomon is a quality, solid catcher, who can swing the bat," said Hobson. "He's a veteran of the Atlantic League, and I think he will really help us."
"Segal is a submarine guy," Hobson added. "He's a guy who can throw every day. He'll really help our bullpen."
With these additions, the Barnstormers now have seven players under contract for 2011. Opening Night is slated for Friday, April 29 against the Road Warriors. Season tickets are available for purchase by contacting the Barnstormers executive offices at 717-509-4487.
The Lancaster Barnstormers are entering their seventh season as a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Home games are played at Clipper Magazine Stadium in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Please call 717.509.HITS (4487) or visit LancasterBarnstormers.com for more information.
