LANCASTER, Pa.-The Lancaster Barnstormers have signed left-handed hitting first baseman Brant Colamarino, whose draft by the Oakland Athletics is discussed in the book, Moneyball, to a 2010 contract, it was announced today by manager Tom Herr.

Colamarino, a native of Western Pennsylvania, was selected by Oakland in the seventh round of the 2002 draft out of the University of Pittsburgh. On his way up through the ranks, he hit 17 or more home runs in four consecutive seasons with a peak of 21 in 2005 when he split time between Class AA Midland and Class AAA Sacramento.

He last played with Midland in 2007 before a shoulder injury sidelined him the last two seasons.

In Michael Lewis' bestseller, Colamarino is mentioned three times as being on the list of players highly sought by Oakland in the 2002 draft. Athletics executive Paul DePodesta discussed Colamarino as "(possibly) being the best hitter in the country" available in that year's draft.

Also appearing on those same lists are former Barnstormers Ben Fritz and Brian Stavisky along with current Major Leaguers such as Khalil Greene, Nick Swisher, Jeremy Guthrie and Mark Teahen.

"(Brant) is also an outstanding fielding first baseman according to our sources," said Herr. "He is really highly motivated coming off an injury and should be a great addition to the ballclub."

This brings the number of 2010 players signed by the Barnstormers to seven.

The Barnstormers open their 2010 season at Long Island on Thursday, April 22. Clipper Magazine Stadium will open its gates for the first time during the regular season on Friday, April 30 as Lancaster will entertain the cross-Susquehanna rival York Revolution. Season tickets are available by calling team offices at 717-509-4487 or online at www.lancasterbarnstormers.com.

The Lancaster Barnstormers are entering their sixth season as a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Home games are played at Clipper Magazine Stadium in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Please call 717.509.HITS (4487) or visit LancasterBarnstormers.com for more information.
