York Revolution News Release
(York, Pa.): York Revolution team captain Keoni DeRenne has earned an invite to spring training with the two-time defending National League champion Philadelphia Phillies, it was announced today. DeRenne joins lefthanded pitcher Edwin Walker (Houston Astros) as Revolution players already signed for 2010 to earn a spring training invite with an affiliated club. He also becomes the sixth member of the 2009 Revolution to go to spring camp with an affiliate, and the third heading to Clearwater, FL with the Phillies.
DeRenne had been announced as the first official signing for 2010, which would be his fourth season in York, making him the longest-tenured player in Revolution history. He was also named the team's first-ever captain earlier in the off-season. DeRenne has appeared in 339 games with the Revolution, the most by any player. He holds the franchise's career records for hits (357), runs (197), at-bats (1293), doubles (71), stolen bases (47), and walks (160).
The Honolulu native batted.289 with five homeruns and 18 stolen bases in 128 games last season, garnering Revolution Player of the Year honors, as well as a spot on the Freedom Division All-Star team. DeRenne initially signed with York in June of 2007, and became the first recipient of the team's annual Community Outreach Player of the Year award during the inaugural season. He burst onto the scene in York by hitting.302 that year, and is a career.276 hitter in a Revolution uniform.
"He impressed me with the way that he played last season, and it's no surprise that he impressed some other people as well," said Revolution manager and director of baseball operations Andy Etchebarren. "We wish him the very best with this opportunity."
The 2010 season will be DeRenne's 11th in professional baseball. He has spent time in the Braves, Yankees, Diamondbacks, and Red Sox organizations, reaching Triple-A with Arizona in 2004 and 2005, and with Boston in 2006.
DeRenne joins fellow Hawaiian, and close friend Shane Victorino, a National League All-Star outfielder, in Phillies spring training.
Other Revs from last year's team currently in spring camp are: LHP Daryl Harang (Cincinnati Reds), RHP Bob Zimmermann (Toronto Blue Jays), 1B/C John Purdom (Phillies), INF Brandon Pinckney (Phillies), and 1B Kala Ka'aihue (Oakland Athletics).
