Lancaster Stormers News Release
Cleuluis Rondon drove a three-run homer to the opposite field in the top of the ninth to tie the game, and Jordan McCrum pitched two brilliant innings for the win as the Barnstormers toppled the Lexington Legends, 6-5, in 10 innings to open a three-game series.
Rondon reached Lexington closer Derek Self for a homer to straightaway left field after Anderson De La Rosa singled down the left field line and Nick Shumpert was hit by a pitch.
McCrum (1-2) retired the side in order with two strikeouts in the bottom of the ninth to send the game to extra innings.
The Barnstormers began the tenth with Blake Allemand at second. Alejandro De Aza lined the first pitch offered by Bryan Quillens (0-1) straight at right fielder Tillman Pugh, advancing Allemand to third. Trayvon Robinson, who had homered in the eighth, was walked intentionally to bring up Kelly Dugan. Lancaster started Robinson, and shortstop Roberto Baldoquin could only get Dugan at first on a broken bat grounder past the mound as Allemand scored.
McCrum faced a similar scenario with Pugh opening the bottom of the tenth at second. Cole Sturgeon smashed out to second, moving the runners. Manager Ross Peeples also opted for the intentional walk, putting Ben Aklinski aboard. McCrum struck out Omar Artsen, then got three-time big league All-Star Brandon Phlilips to pop out to third for the final out.
The Barnstormers offense produced four straight singles to start the night but did not score off lefty Christian Friedrich as Caleb Gindl was thrown out at the plate by Sturgeon, and Dugan slapped into a bases loaded double play.
After that, Friedrich shut Lancaster down, and his team built a 4-0 lead. Pugh doubled home Chris Fornaci in the third, and Baldoquin's RBI single in the fourth scored D.J. Peterson with an unearned run.
Boydstun allowed a walk to Fornaci and Pugh's second double in the fifth before leaving with an injury. Aklinski's RBI single gave the Legends a 4-0 advantage. The teams exchanged single runs in the seventh.
Lancaster will send Augie Sylk (2-1) to the mound on Saturday at 6:35. Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel at 6:30.
NOTES: Robinson's homer produced his first RBI since July 13...Allemand singled twice off Friedrich, his first two hits from the left side of the plate against a left-handed pitcher...Rondon has 14 runs scored and 10 RBI in his last 12 games...De La Rosa was 2-for-4 and is batting .348 in his last 19 games...The Barnstormers moved back to within one game of .500 (25-26).
