Barnstormers Rally Attempt Comes Up Short

Lancaster Stormers News Release

For the second straight game, the Lancaster Barnstormers trailed after four before roaring back. However, on Monday night against Camden, their rally efforts fell short as the Riversharks held on for a 7-4 victory at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Brian Burgamy slapped a two-run double down the left field line in the first inning, and Lloyd Turner clubbed a solo homer in the top of the third for a quick, 3-0 Camden lead.

The Barnstormers were able to respond on booming homers to right by Emerson Frostad and Terry Tiffee in the bottom of the inning to climb within a run.

This night, the top of the fourth proved too much to overcome. Eddy Perez opened the inning with a single to right and was forced at second by Billy Rice's slow roller to second. J.D. Durbin (0-1) got Jake Eigsti looking at a third strike for the second out of the inning and appeared to be out of trouble when Tommy Everidge made a backhanded snag of a crisp one-hopper by Shea Harris. However, Everidge lobbed the throw over Durbin's head, giving the Riversharks runners at first and third.

The dam burst. Chris Walker flared a single to left to score Rice for a 4-2 edge. Durbin walked Turner to load the bases, and Pie cracked his third hit of the night, a double into the left field corner to clear the bags for a 7-2 lead.

From there, Camden managed only one hit and one walk over the remaining 5 1/3 innings. Lancaster, though, could only threaten but never get the big hit.

The Barnstormers got one run back in the fifth as Fehlandt Lentini was hit by a pitch, stole second and rode home on a triple to left center by Blake Gailen.

Another scored in the seventh. Jesus Merchan led off against Sean Jarrett (2-1) with a bunt single up the third base line. Lentini scalded a grounder off Perez' glove at third for a double, and Frostad greeted lefty reliever Mariano Gomez with a soft line drive single to center to slice the lead to 7-4. Lentini was held at third and never scored. Godwin bounced back to the mound. Gailen grounded to first, and Burgamy cut Lentini down at the plate for the second out. Tiffee, who drove in five runs on Sunday night, struck out to end the inning.

Tiffee was given another chance in the ninth. Lancaster loaded the bases off closer John Lujan on singles by Lentini and Frostad and a walk to Gailen. Lujan kept the Lancaster third baseman from the rare "ultimate grand slam," instead getting a routine grounder to second to end the night.

The Barnstormers entertain the RIversharks on Tuesday morning at 11:00. Lancaster will send lefty Rich Rundles (0-0) to the mound against right-hander Brian Corey (1-1). The series will switch to Camden for the final two games Wednesday and Thursday.

NOTES: Frostad was 3-for-4 after picking up only four hits in his first 22 at bats of the season...Gailen had only one extra-base hit prior to the game...Lentini is 6-for-12 in the last three games...Since giving up seven runs in the final 1 1/3 innings on Wednesday, the Lancaster bullpen has allowed only four earned runs in 18 2/3 frames.
