Barnstormers Pushed To The Brink
September 22, 2011 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
Thursday night started with promise for the Lancaster Barnstormers. They loaded the bases with nobody out in the first inning on two walks and a single.
Then, only one run scored. It would be the last for the Barnstormers as York bounced back for a 4-1 victory and a two games to none series lead in the best-of-five Freedom Division playoffs.
Gilberto Mejia drew a five-pitch walk from Nick Schumacher (1-0), and Wayne Lydon chased him to third with a single into right. Tommy Everidge worked out a walk on a full count pitch. That got Fernando Seguignol to the plate with the bases loaded. The Lancaster DH sent a fly ball to the warning track in left, good for a sacrifice fly with Lydon hustling to third. Terry Tiffee drilled a grounder on one perfect hop to shortstop Ramon Castro for a double play, killing the inning.
Schumacher and a pair of relievers only allowed four more hits for the remainder of the game, no two in the same inning.
The only other significant threat for Lancaster came in the third. Matt Tupman led off with a single to right and eventually worked his way to third on a pair of wild pitches. Everidge picked up his second walk of the night and snuck to second with Seguignol at the plate.
Schumacher snuck a back door breaking ball onto the outside corner to strike out the Lancaster DH. No more Barnstormers got to third.
J.D. Durbin (0-1) cracked slightly in the bottom of the fourth. Val Majewski stung a single into center, and Bryant Nelson sent a chopper through the right side. Jose Herrera grounded into a 5-4 force play for the first out, bringing up Vince Harrison. The York third baseman nailed a 3-2 pitch into left center to drive in Majewski, tying the game. One out later, Scott Grimes was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but Durbin preserved the tie by striking out Chris Walker on a check swing.
Durbin got through six, but Paniagua cranked a 3-2 pitch over the 37-foot wall in left to start the seventh. York would stretch its lead to 3-1 on a walk, wild pitch, ground out and sacrifice fly by Chris Nowak later in the inning. Paniagua drove a double over Lydon's head in center to drive in Harrison in the eighth, capping off the night.
R.J. Rodriguez, the winning pitcher on Wednesday, allowed a two-out double by Tiffee in the ninth before getting Stephen Douglas to ground out, ending the evening.
The scene shifts back to Clipper Magazine Stadium for Game Three on Friday evening at 7:00. Lancaster will send John Halama (6-6) to the mound against York right-hander Lorenzo Barcelo (5-0). The remainder of the series will be played in Lancaster. Friday's game can be heard on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA and will also be streamed live on sportsjuice.com and ibnsports.com.
NOTES: Lancaster is 2-for-17 with runners in scoring position in the series...The Barnstormers have only 12 hits in 27 innings off the top three pitchers from the American Association (Schumacher, along with Ben Moore and David Trahan of Southern Maryland)...Douglas had the only two Lancaster extra-base hits of the series until Tiffee's in the ninth...Lancaster has been outscored, 5-0, in the final three innings in the series.
