Playoff Baseball Returns to Lancaster
September 22, 2011 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release
After a five-year absence, playoff baseball is making its triumphant return to Lancaster. The Barnstormers will host the York Revolution in Game 3 of the Freedom Division Finals on Friday night. For the first time, the Barnstormers and Revolution are meeting in the Atlantic League playoffs, with the winner of the best-of-five series advancing to the championship round.
The two ball clubs controlled the Freedom Division for the duration of the 2011 season. The first half championship came down to a final four-game showdown between them with the Barnstormers needing to take two out of the four contests. John Halama fired a complete game shutout in the opener, pitching the Barnstormers to a 2-0 win. The next afternoon, in the front half of a day-night doubleheader, Adam Calderone made a game saving, leaping catch against the 37-foot high left field wall in the bottom of the sixth inning then put Lancaster on top with a sacrifice fly in the seventh. He turned around and J.C. Holt kept a run from scoring on a blast off the fence in left center by James Shanks in the bottom of the eighth, and the Barnstormers prevailed, 4-3, to win the first half title.
York, the defending Atlantic League champions, won its first five games of the second half, but the Barnstormers were able to barge into the lead as late as August 12. York, however, won 20 of its last 29 games to put the division title away by 5 1/2 games, clinching the half with a double header win over Bridgeport on September 15.
Meanwhile, the Barnstormers were able to snatch the Community Cup away from the Revolution. Even that competition went down to the wire, finally being decided on a Travis Metcalf homer and Gilberto Mejia RBI triple in the top of the ninth on August 18, giving the Barnstormers an 11-9 win in the game and a 10-8 victory in the season series.
Great seats are still available for Friday's game. The first 3,000 fans through the gates will receive code red rally towels, courtesy of Lancaster Toyota and Station House Tavern, and fans can enjoy a playoff post-game fireworks extravaganza. Tickets can be purchased by visiting LancasterBarnstormers.com, by calling 509-HITS or by visiting the Faulkner Chevrolet Box Office.
The Lancaster Barnstormers are currently in their seventh season as a member of the Atlantic League of Professional Baseball. Home games are played at Clipper Magazine Stadium in downtown Lancaster, Pennsylvania. Please call 717.509.HITS (4487) or visit LancasterBarnstormers.com for more information.
