Lancaster Stormers News Release
Southern Maryland leads the league in team pitching, a fact which has been clearly in evidence the last two nights.
Kenny Rayborn tossed six scoreless innings in front of 6,843 Saturday evening at Regency Furniture Stadium, pacing the host Blue Crabs to an 8-0 whitewash of the visiting Barnstormers. Lancaster now has not scored in the last 16 innings of the series.
With the win, the Blue Crabs extended their lead in the Liberty Division to five games. Their magic number has been reduced to seven.
Lancaster pieced together a number of threats early against Rayborn (5-4). Aaron Herr and Gerard Haran grounded consecutive singles into left field with one out in the second, then never budged. Bryan Sabatella walked to open the third, and Lloyd Turner followed with a bunt single. Rayborn pitched his way out of inning, again without a runner ever advancing to third base. With one out in the fourth, Haran reached on a single up the middle and was forced at second by Danny Bravo. Rayborn walked Michael Campbell and Sabatella to load the bases before fanning Turner to end the threat.
Lancaster did not move another runner into scoring position until Jed Morris and Bravo drew walks in the eighth inning off reliever Mike James.
Southern Maryland produced a run off Eric Ackerman (2-5) in the second inning. Jeremy Owens drilled a double to left leading off the inning. Jermy Acey grounded out on a smash that deflected off Ackerman's heel, sending Owens to third. He scored when Octavio Martinez' sinking liner fell in front of Quincy Foster in right field.
Ackerman, with the aid of two great running catches by center fielder Michael Woods, kept the deficit at one run until the bottom of the fifth. John Ramistella led off with a single to the hole at shortstop. Mike Just bunted to the first base side of the mound. Ackerman tried to force Ramistella at second, but his throw was wild, pulling Lloyd Turner off the bag at second. Travis Garcia mashed a ground rule double to right center for a 2-0 lead, and Patrick Osborn's grounder along the third base line produced another marker.
Osborn added an RBI single off Antonio Alfonseca with two outs in the seventh. The Blue Crabs tacked on four more in the eighth inning off Neal Musser, three on a double to center by Ramistella.
The Barnstormers and Blue Crabs wrap up the four-game series Sunday afternoon. Jason Scobie (3-3) will make the start for Lancaster against Ryan Bicondoa (5-2). After the game, the Barnstormers head home to face the Somerset Patriots Monday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium at the start of a seven-game homestand.
