Barnstormers Maintain Lead Despite Loss

June 22, 2018 - Atlantic League (AtL)
Lancaster Stormers News Release

The Lancaster Barnstormers ran into the Atlantic League's best starting pitcher on Friday night and still made a game out of it.

Bennett Parry struck out 11 in six innings, leading the Long Island Ducks to a narrow, 5-4 win over the Barnstormers in the second game of a four-game series at Clipper Magazine Stadium.

Lancaster did receive help on the other side of the Susquehanna as York topped Sugar Land, 4-1, keeping the Barnstormers 1 1/2 games ahead of the Skeeters in the Freedom Division chase. Meanwhile, the Ducks were able to close within 2 1/2 lengths of the Somerset Patriots in the Liberty Division after the Pats fell, 7-0, to the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs.

Parry (4-0) struck out at least one batter in each of his six innings, saving his best work for a highly pressurized second inning when he fanned the side after a walk to Trayvon Robinson and a double by K.C. Hobson put runners at second and third with no one out.

The Ducks supported the right-hander with early runs off Joe Gardner (3-4). With one out in the first, Emilio Bonifacio lobbed a homer off the front edge of the Haller picnic tent for a 1-0 lead. Travis Snider walked and moved to second on a ground single through the left side by Lew Ford. David Washington smashed a single into right to bring the second run home.

Lancaster's defense only got one out on the next two plays, costing a third run. Taylor Ard ripped a grounder to the left of shortstop Vladimir Frias. Frias made a diving stop but, in his haste to get a double play started, failed to get much on a throw to second, allowing Washington to arrive safely. Then, with the bases loaded, Cody Puckett hit a potential double play grounder to third, but Tyler Bortnick appeared to have trouble freeing the ball from his glove on the pivot as Ford crossed for a 3-0 edge.

Audie Afenir made it 4-0 in favor of Long Island with a two-out RBI double in the top of the third.

Lancaster fought back. Ryan Casteel was able to bloop a single into left center to score Darian Sandford in the third. Two innings later, Sandford singled up the middle with two outs, stole second, took third on a wild pitch and scored when Blake Gailen lined a double to left.

The run that eventually tied the game scored in the top of the seventh. Dan Lyons bounced a single into left and took third when Jordany Valdespin blooped a hit-and-run single into center. John Anderson took over and coaxed a double play grounder out of Bonifacio as a run scored.

Gailen lined a two-run homer off reliever Wander Perez in the bottom of the seventh to narrow the lead to one. Lancaster, however, would not manager another baserunner on the night as the rally fell short. Colton Murray struck out the side in the eighth and Francisco Rodriguez retired the side in order in the bottom of the ninth for his tenth save.

The Barnstormers will send Jonathan Albaladejo (5-2) to the mound on Saturday evening against Jake Fisher (3-1). Fireworks will follow the game. Fans may tune into the Barnstormers YouTube Channel, beginning at 6:15.
