
Barnstormers Lose in Overtime to Duke City

A strong second half helped push The Duke City Gladiators (1-0) past The Iowa Barnstormers (1-1) on Saturday, May 22. The Gladiators won 63-55 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines.
The Duke City Gladiators opened with the ball and went to work early. Gladiators Quarterback Nate Davis throws a complete throw to receiver Greg Dent Jr. for a 26-yard touchdown. PAT was good and put the Gladiators up 7-0 early. The Iowa Barnstormers tried to answer back but were shut down quickly by the Gladiators defense. With 8:59 left in the first quarter, Gladiators quarterback finds receiver Dello Davis for 41-yards to put the Gladiators up 14-0. The Barnstormers offense answered back and Daquan Neal completed his pass to receiver Connor Hollenbeck for a 17-yard touchdown. The Gladiators offense controlled the end of the first quarter and put them up 21-7 after a complete pass by Nate Davis to Jared Elmore.
Barnstormer's offense came alive in the second quarter. Neal rushed for 15-yards to start the quarter and after an incomplete pass to teammate Drew Mahoney, Neal rushed for 7-yards for a touchdown with 11:35 left in the half, making the score 21-13 Gladiators.
The Gladiators quickly responded with a 26-yard pass from Nate Davis to Xavier Amey. After a complete PAT, the Gladiators remained ahead 27-13 with 10:11 left in the half. Neal found the end zone himself and rushed for 23 yards. PAT was scored from kicker Nathan Criswell and the Barnstormers made it 27-20 with 6:55 left in the half. The Gladiators tried to respond but were shut down after an interception by John McClure. Neal was able to find the end zone again and tied the game 27-27 with 1:15 left in the half. The Gladiators quickly answered and Raymond Taylor rushed for 8-yards to put the Gladiators back up 34-27. To end the first half, Daquan Neal found the endzone after a short rush and tied the game at 34-34 going into the second half.
To start the third quarter, the Barnstormers received. With 11:28 left in the first half, Daquan Neal was able to find Elad Covaliu in the endzone for a 7-yard complete pass. After a complete PAT, the Barnstormers took their first lead of the game, 41-34. The Gladiators offense quickly answered back after Nate Davis found receiver Raymond Taylor for two yards for a touchdown. PAT is good and we are tied again at 41-41 with 6:57 left in the third quarter. To complete the third quarter, Neal completed the 13-yard pass to Drew Mahoney for a first down. With :05 left in the quarter, Neal completed the pass to Elad Covaliu for 10-yards and after a completed PAT, the Barnstormers finished the quarter up 48-41 over the Gladiators.
The fourth quarter started off fast for the Gladiators offense. After a complete 10-yard pass from Nate Davis to Dello Davis, the game was tied up at 48-48. The Barnstormers answered right back and Daquan Neal was able to find Drew Mahoney in the end zone for another Barnstormers touchdown. With 5:43 left in the game, the Barnstormers regained their lead, 54-48. The Gladiators again found a way into the end zone. After a complete 10-yard pass to Greg Dent. Jr, Nate Davis rushed 5-yards to the endzone to tie the game at 55-55. After a missed field goal attempt made by each team, the fourth quarter ended 55-55 and went to overtime.
To start overtime, the Barnstormers chose to defend. The Gladiators quarterback Nate Davis was able to complete a 7-yard throw to Dello Davis for a touchdown. Nate Davis was able to find Dello Davis in the endzone again for the two-point conversion to put the Gladiators up 63-55. The Barnstormers tried one last time to score but the Gladiators defense was too much. The Gladiators left Des Moines with a 63-55 win over The Iowa Barnstormers.
The Barnstormers return home to Wells Fargo Arena to face The Bismarck Bucks on Saturday, May 29th. Kickoff is set for 7:05 p.m. CST.
