Barnstormers Lose Heartbreaker to Green Bay 51-46

Des Moines, IA - The Iowa Barnstormers 2009 season came to an end with a 51-46 defeat at the hands of the Green Bay Blizzard before a Wellmark Field crowd of 9,061 on Saturday night. The Midwestern Division champion Barnstormers finish the season with a record of 13-5, while Green Bay improves to 12-6 and will battle Wilkes-Barre Scranton in the American Conference Final next weekend. The game was a wild affair, with the lead changing hands an amazing 10 times. Neither team had an advantage of more than 9 points for the entire game. Iowa struck quickly when Quarterback Brian Villanueva found WR Errick McCown in the end zone, giving the âStormers a 7-0 lead. Green Bay responded with 16 straight points to take the lead 16-7, but Iowa struck back with 13 straight points of their own to reclaim the lead 20-16. The teams' traded touchdowns on their final possessions of the first half, giving Iowa a narrow 26-23 lead at the break.
Iowa came out strong in the second half as Villanueva scored on his third rushing touchdown of the night to extend the Barnstormers lead to 32-23. However Green Bay stormed back to take a 37-32 lead, just seconds into the fourth quarter. After 4 more lead changes the Barnstormers found themselves down by five with less than two minutes remaining on the clock. Iowa marched down the field and were in position to take the lead when Villanueva was intercepted at the Green Bay goal line by Rayshaun Kizer. The interception sealed the victory for the Blizzard ending Iowa's dream of an af2 championship.
