Barnstormers Iced By Green

Lancaster Stormers News Release

Nick Green completed the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs' suppression of the Barnstormers offense, firing eight strong innings on Sunday evening as the Blue Crabs completed a three-game sweep with a 6-1 victory at Regency Furniture Stadium.

The Barnstormers were knocked to 2 1/2 games behind the York Revolution, who were rained out against the Road Warriors.

Green (8-5) checked Lancaster on eight hits. The right-hander from Atlanta walked none and struck out three.

He was nicked in the top of the third as the Barnstormers took a 1-0 lead. Iggy Suarez singled to left, and Matt Tupman followed with a lined single into right. Both runners moved ahead on a 5-3 sacrifice by Gilberto Mejia. Adam Calderone's bouncer to first was misplayed by Casey Benjamin for an error that allowed Suarez to score. Tommy Everidge grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Lancaster's only other significant threat came in the seventh when Brandon Jones and Suarez singled. Green got Tupman to bounce into a 4-6-3 double play to end the inning and the Barnstormers final hope of a comeback.

Southern Maryland grabbed a 2-1 lead in the fifth off John Halama (5-5). Ben Harrison looped a shallow fly ball into left that eluded Matt Watson's diving try for a double. One out later, Bridger Hunt, making his first appearance of the series, clubbed his second homer of the season to left center.

Travis Garcia added a solo homer in the sixth for a 3-1 margin. Halama, who gave up 11 hits on the evening, was reached for a fourth run in the seventh when J.R. Hopf doubled into the right field corner and raced around on a two-out single by Brandon Pinckney.

Benjamin capped the scoring with a two-run blast to left center off T.J. Beam in the eighth.

The Barnstormers head to Somerset on Tuesday to open a two-game series against the Patriots with Matt Wright (4-9) on the mound. The game will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA and streamed live on sportsjuice.com. Game time is 7:05.

NOTES: The sweep was the third against the Barnstormers who fell below .500 for the first time in the second half...Lancaster has dropped seven of its last nine games...Lance Burkhart managed the club as Butch Hobson is spending the week in Michigan watching his son, K.C., play for the Lansing Lugnuts, a Class A affiliate of the Toronto Blue Jays...The homer by Hunt was the first by the Blue Crabs against the Barnstormers in 11 1/2 games this season.
