Lancaster Stormers News Release
Lancaster had scored 70 runs in seven games against the Newark Bears in the second half of the season. The Bears must have figured they would need all the runs they could get. And they got plenty.
Newark ran up 21 hits and scored 19 runs in a 19-7 thumping of the Barnstormers Tuesday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
With the loss, the Barnstormers fell five games behind the York Revolution in the Freedom Division.
Newark took control of the game in the top of the third off an ailing Eric Ackerman (5-7). Bobby Hill opened the frame with a walk, and Ramon Castro lined a double to right field. Keith Reed was hit by a pitch to load the bases with nobody out. Willis Otanez put the Bears ahead to stay at 3-2 with a two-run single down the third base line. After Ackerman retired Ruben Mateo on a fly ball to deep left, Raul Gonzalez and Randall Simon kept the pounding going with consecutive RBI singles for a 5-2 lead. Ackerman hit Ramon Nivar with a pitch to reload the bases, and Scott Knazek cleared them with a triple to right center for an 8-2 lead. He later scored on a force play grounder.
Newark then unleashed a long ball attack. Ramon Castro hit a two-run shot to right in the fifth inning. Ruben Mateo slugged another two-run homer in the sixth and followed with a grand slam in the seventh.
The Barnstormers hit four homers of their own. Mike Woods and Lloyd Turner opened the game with back-to-back homers for a 2-1 lead. Ian Bladergroen slugged a leadoff blast in the fourth, and Ivanon Coffie tacked on a three-run shot in the sixth.
Newark starter Benito Baez, in his first appearance in four months, lasted only four innings. Shaun Babula (1-2) pitched three scoreless innings of relief and was awarded the win.
NOTES: Woods led off with a homer for the fourth time in the last 17 days...He broke the team record for runs scored with 92...Woods and Turner were the third pair of Barnstormers to hit consecutive homers this season...Mateo's slam was only the second off Lancaster pitching in 2008...Erik Dessau (0-2) will make the start on Wednesday against newcomer Jeff Blitstein...Game time is 7:05.
