Barnstormers Fall to Storm in Overtime

The Iowa Barnstormers (3-3) fell to the Sioux Falls Storm (4-3) on the road on Friday night, 50-47.

The Storm received the ball to start the game. Two defensive penalties on the Barnstormers helped set up a rushing touchdown for Storm quarterback Daniel Smith. The Barnstormers took over, looking to fire back with a score, but fumbled the ball on fourth down. Sawyer Petre scored a field goal for the Storm on their next possession, putting his team ahead 10-0. Taking just 31 seconds, though, quarterback Darius-James Peterson launched a 43-yard touchdown pass to Kentrez Bell. A drop-kick by Gabriel Rui awarded the Barnstormers 2 points and made the score 10-8 at the end of the first quarter.

Storm runningback Nate Chavious answered back with a rushing touchdown.TD The success for Sioux Falls continued when LB Undraez Lilly intercepted Peterson's pass, which was intended for the end zone.

However, Iowa DB JR Stevens answered back with an interception of his own. This helped set up Bell's second receiving touchdown of the night. But Petre made a long field goal as the second quarter ended, extending their lead to 20-15 at the end of the first half.

The Barnstormers received the ball to start the third quarter. They took their first lead of the night when Peterson threw a touchdown pass to WR Dom McNeil. This lead didn't last long, though, as a long touchdown pass to WR Aaron Dilworth made the score 27-22 in favor of the Storm. The Barnstormers fired back with a 21-yard touchdown from Bell. A successful 2-point conversion gave them their largest lead of the night, 30-27. Another Petre tied the game at 30, but another rushing touchdown by Peterson gave the Barnstormers a 37-30 lead going into the fourth quarter.

A rushing touchdown by Chavious tied the game once again, but Antonio Wimbush reached the end zone to give the Barnstormers their lead back. Chavious scored his third touchdown of the night to tie the game at 44 with less than 6 minutes left.

With 56 seconds left, on fourth down, the Barnstormers decided to go for it and failed. Sioux Falls took over and Petre had the chance to win the game with 2 seconds left but missed it wide left.

The Barnstormers received the ball first in overtime. Rui made a field goal to go ahead 47-44, but Chavious caught a touchdown to win the game for the Storm, 50-47.

It was the third matchup between these teams this season. They will play one more time on June 4th in Des Moines.

The Barnstormers will take on the Quad City Steamwheelers (3-3) on Saturday, May 7 at Wells Fargo Arena in Des Moines. Kickoff is set for 7:05 P.M.
