Barnstormers Fall to Steamwheelers in Season Opener

DES MOINES - The Iowa Barnstormers (0-1) fell to the Quad City Steamwheelers (1-1) in their season opener Friday night, 46-24.
The game began with a rushing touchdown by Quad City's receiver Kerrion Moore. A successful field goal on their next possession quickly put the Steamwheelers ahead 10-0. Barnstormers quarterback Darius-James Peterson rushed in for a touchdown as the first quarter ended, putting the Barnstormers on the board trailing 10-7.
The second quarter began with another rushing touchdown from Quad City's Moore, giving the Steamwheelers a 17-7 lead. The Barnstormers answered with a 54-yard field goal from Gabriel Rui, 17-10. After a touchdown pass to Quad City's Mike Carrigan, the first half ended with the Steamwheelers ahead 24-10.
The second half began with a Barnstormers onside kick which was recovered by the Steamwheelers, resulting in Moore's third touchdown of the night and giving Quad City a 31-10 lead. Peterson answered quickly for the Barnstormers with a rushing touchdown, trailing 31-17 at the end of the third quarter.
A Barnstormers interception by defensive back LeCorey Demease gave them possession of the ball. A touchdown pass from Peterson to receiver Eric Thomas added points to the Barnstormers score and they were able to add 14 unanswered points to the board. The Barnstormers' comeback fell short though, as Quad City's Keyvan Rudd caught a touchdown pass putting them up 13 with 6:27 left in the game. A safety and score by the Steamwheelers ended the game at 46-24.
The Barnstormers will continue their season and look to get their first win on Monday, March 28 as they travel to face the Sioux Falls Storm.
