Lancaster Stormers News Release
Joe Holden and Fernando Cortez each picked up two hits and drove in two runs as the Somerset Patriots bumped off the Lancaster Barnstormers, 5-3, Friday evening at Clipper Magazine Stadium.
With the loss, Lancaster's lead over the surging York Revolution was trimmed to just 1 1/2 games. The first half ends on July 10.
Cortez and Michael Hernandez hit early home runs off Cesar Carrillo (1-4) as the Patriots jumped out to a 2-0 lead behind emerging ace Derrick Gordon.
However, it was Holden who delivered the night's biggest blow. Yusuf Carter led off the fifth with a ground single into left field, and Elliott Ayala followed with a walk. Both runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Wayne Lydon. Holden hit a hot grounder toward the middle which ticked off Carrillo's glove into center to drive in a pair for a 4-0 cushion. Cortez grounded into a double play.
Lancaster cut into the lead against Gordon (3-0) in the bottom of the inning. Tommy Everidge sliced a homer, his 10th of the season, around the foul pole, and Fernando Seguignol launched another opposite field homer to take over the league lead with 11.
Sam Wiley, who took over at third base after Aaron Herr was ejected in the third, kept the rally going with a sharp single into center. J.C. Holt beat out an infield single, but Alvin Colina fouled out ending the inning.
The Barnstormers did everything but draw even in the seventh. Ben Copeland walked and stole second. One out later, Seguignol picked up a second base on balls. Reliever Jeff Kennard fanned Wiley for the second out, but Holt came through with an RBI double to left. Colina struck out to end the threat.
Cortez singled home an insurance run in the top of the ninth with a two-out liner to left center off Kris Regas. Andrew Dobies yielded a leadoff double to Everidge in the bottom of the ninth, but the Barnstormers, who were 1-for-12 with runners in scoring position, could not get any further. Dobies earned his third save.
The series continues on Saturday evening with Matt Wright (1-5) matched up against right-hander Nick Ungs (2-4). Game time is 6:30 with fireworks to follow. The contest will be aired on Fox Sports Radio, 1490, WLPA along with a webstream on sportsjuice.com and ibnsports.com.
