Iowa Barnstormers News Release
The Iowa Barnstormers (3-2) fell to the Massachusetts Pirates (4-1) in Worcester on Saturday night, 36-22.
The game began with a 42-yard touchdown run from quarterback Darius-James Peterson of the Barnstormers. The Pirates were held scoreless on their first offensive drive and the Barnstormers capitalized with a field goal by Gabriel Rui. The Pirate's kicker, Craig Peterson, made the score 10-3 at the end of the first quarter with a field goal of his own.
A long offensive drive by the Barnstormers resulted in a 26-yard field goal by Rui. The Pirates answered back with a rushing touchdown from quarterback Mike Glass.
Rui then made his third field goal of the night, but the Pirates took over and quickly scored, leaving the game tied at 16 at the half.
The second half began with a touchdown by the Pirates, giving them their first lead of the night. WR Isaac Zico caught the pass in the end zone, but was ejected from the game after receiving his second unsportsmanlike conduct call. The Barnstormers received extra yards because of the call, but Peterson was sacked on fourth down and gave the ball away. The Pirates capitalized with a touchdown pass to WR Thomas Owens. In desperate need of a score, Peterson threw an interception and the Pirates took over, leading 28-16 at the start of the fourth quarter.
A blocked field goal by Ian McBorrough of the Barnstormers gave them good field position, but Peterson threw another interception, this time to DB Lukas Denis. The Barnstormers' first score of the second half came with just 12 seconds left in the game. The Pirate's defense helped them prevail, 36-22.
With the Pirate's win, they now sit atop the Eastern Conference with just one loss.
The Barnstormers are on the road again next week as they visit the Sioux Falls Storm (3-2). It will be the third of four matchups between the teams this season.
