Lancaster Stormers News Release

The Lancaster Barnstormers did everything well in Ross Peeples' managerial debut, except score.

Missing out on two huge late inning opportunities, the Barnstormers found themselves still in a 1-1 deadlock when Yovan Gonzalez led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a home run down the right field line to produce a 2-1 victory for the host Somerset Patriots at TD Bank Park Friday evening.

Gonzalez, who was 0-for-1 with a walk and a sacrifice on the night, took a 1-1 pitch from Kevin Munson over the boards in the right field corner for the decisive blow. The right-handed batting catcher hit only two homers for the Patriots in 2016.

Starters Bryan Evans and Logan Darnell each threw five scoreless innings before Lancaster broke the ice against lefty Duane Below in the sixth. Darian Sandford reached on Below's throwing error off a comebacker and went to second on a single to center by Jeff Kobernus. Caleb Gindl lined into a double play, taking steam out of the rally. Sandford, with Trayvon Robinson batting, broke for third, and Robinson scorched a ground ball past third baseman Zach Lutz for the Lancaster run.

Somerset tied the game on a Kaohi Downing wild pitch in the bottom of the seventh but failed to get Aharon Eggleston home from third as Darren Ford struck out, and Tyler Bortnick lined to second.

The Barnstormers loaded the bases off right-hander Ryan Kelly in the eighth on singles by Sandford and Kobernus and a walk to Gindl. Kelly recovered to get Robinson to bounce into a 1-2 force out. Lefty Jeremy Bleich took over and coaxed a fly ball to shallow center out of K.C. Hobson.

Lancaster also missed out on a huge chance in the 10th. Anderson De La Rosa opened the inning with a double inside the third base bag and advanced to third on a Sandford bunt. Kobernus' ground ball on the left side was smothered by Scott Kelly, who had scored as a pinch runner for Lutz in the seventh, and Gindl flied to left to end the threat.

NOTES: The Barnstormers are now 8-5 in season openers...Lancaster is 98-138 all-time against Somerset...Sandford and Kobernus each stole a base in the game...The Barnstormers managed three doubles...Evans made his third consecutive Opening Night start and threw five shutout innings for the second year in a row.
